Frequent “Downton Abbey” episode director Brian Percival has been hired to direct “The Book Thief” for Fox 2000 reports Deadline.
Based on the best-selling Marcus Zusak novel, the WWII-set story follows a girl living outside of Munich who survives by stealing books.
Aided by her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids.
One of those who benefits from the books is the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.
Michael Petroni penned the script for the adaptation while Karen Rosenfelt (“The Twilight Saga”) is producing. Shooting kicks off this Summer.
